Matthew Baldwin is a classically trained Bass from the North West of England, studying at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM). His vocal training began at the age of 16, and since then he has strived to be the best in his field. Matthew originally trained under Michael Hall, a family friend who studied at the Royal Academy of Music, who gave him his first look at opera. Through the amateur opera company Musica Lyrica, Matthew gave his first public performances as an operatic soloist singing Arias from The Magic Flute, Don Pasquale, and Showboat. At the age of 18, Matthew performed in his first opera, Tosca, where he played the role of Sciarrone, henchman of Scarpia. During this, Matthew worked as both soloist and stage hand, developing his understanding of theatrical productions.
The second stage of Matthew’s career came when internationally renowned tenor, Angelo Marenzi, asked him to study in Italy for four months of intensive training. Whilst in Italy, Matthew made numerous contacts during his short periods of free time and began to gain an understanding of the language. Matthew gave performances in and around Rome, even venturing as far as Archi to open a concert given by Marenzi and his students. Unfortunately, his time in Italy was short, and Matthew returned to England to begin his formal music education at the RNCM.
Now back in England, Matthew has performed in various concerts, and is a regular soloist for Johns’ Boys Choir, competing in Cor Cymru, and, most recently, performing at the Wales vs New Zealand rugby match. In College, Matthew has appeared in many choirs, but striven to achieve more by throwing himself into as many masterclasses as he can. His first role on the RNCM stage was as a guard in Theodora, and he is excited to appear in the upcoming opera Cendrillon as a doctor and chorus member.
